Aussies Near Perfect FOR 1st MWC Gold

July 27, 2009 International No Comments

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN — Two walks issued were all that separated pitcher Adam Folkard from a perfect game here in today’s 5-0 win over New Zealand. The fact that the lanky hurler not only no-hit three-time defending International Softball Federation men’s world champion New Zealand, but did so in the gold medal game of the twelfth edition of the event, probably will set just as well with him on the flight home to Australia.

At the last ISF Men’s World Championship, the Aussies medaled for the first time ever, winning bronze. Folkard’s ten-strikeout performance today leaves them sitting on top of the men’s fast pitch softball world following a ten-day tournament that began with 16 countries competing. … Continue Reading

Sunday the 71 delegates from the 16 countries attending received coaching from softball experts provided by the International Softball Federation.

HRH Prince Feisal said in a press release, “today has been very important for the Generations For Peace delegates who have learnt the importance of inclusiveness in sport. Softball is new to many of them but already they have seen the advantage of using a team sport that allows girls and boys, men and women to play together. It is also a sport that uses many different physical facets and skills, so everyone can be included”.

Earlier Sunday the delegates learned how important the role that the media has to play in spreading the global message of Generations For Peace. The delegates were advised how to build and maintain relationships with their local media.

Prince Feisal said, “Generations For Peace needs the oxygen of publicity to grow around the world, therefore the media session was particularly important. There was intense interest from the delegates and I was impressed by the understanding and experience that many already have in dealing with the media”.

During the camp the delegates honed their new skills in basketball and volleyball, as well as football which they undertook under the guidance of an English professional provided by the Laureus Foundation, one of Generations For Peace partners.

Flyer Softball Trio Complete In Italy Tournament

August 27, 2008 International No Comments

DAYTON, Ohio – Three Dayton Flyers softball players experienced the trip of a lifetime this summer (Aug. 3-12), competing for the USA Athletes International softball team in Italy. Sophomores Allie Falk and Emily Stegeman, along with incoming freshman Raime Cronkhite, represented UD and the United States of America in the Arezzo Softball/Baseball International Tournament.

The Team USAs consisted of women from Illinois, California, Georgia, South Carolina, Iowa, Ohio and Michigan. USA Athletes International sponsors 13 sports and has been represented at tournaments on six continents. The organization believes the principle that sport has the power to unite people and change the world.

“The thing I will remember most about this trip is the people,” said Cronkhite. “We grew very close and spent a lot of time together in nine days. Plus, playing on a softball field with houses on an Italian hillside as the backdrop was very cool.”

For these three girls from the Midwest – Cronkhite from Grand Rapids, Mich., Falk from Hudson, Iowa, and Stegeman from Dayton, Ohio – the chance to tour Europe, meet friends that will last a lifetime, and play internationally, is something they will never forget.

“This trip was about travelling, competing and experiencing,” said Falk. “It gave us the opportunity to compete against at the international level, and learn about other cultures on and off the field. We met people we would have otherwise never had the opportunity to do so.”

Falk and Stegeman were on the Team USA squad that went 6-1 and brought home the runners-up trophy, falling 7-5 in the championship game to the host team Italy. Cronkhite’s Team USA finished the tournament with a 5-2 mark. Both squads competed against teams from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Malta.

In addition to all the action on the diamond, the girls took a two-day tour of Rome, visited the Coliseum, the Basilica of Saint Peter, The Vatican, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the beautiful countryside of Siena, Italy. They even got to make an authentic Italian pizza.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Stegeman. “I’ll never forget playing against the international teams, walking into the beautiful churches where the pictures just say it all, learning the history, and learning the culture.”

The USA Teams were inundated with interest from the other international squads.

“We met so many people who would trade just about anything to get USA gear,” said Cronkhite. “This makes me realize we sometimes take advantage of what we have. We get the chance to learn and play softball at a young age. Some of the other countries don’t get the opportunities that we do.”

Falk even gave complimentary pitching lessons to the German squad.

“There were six girls who asked a lot of questions and were open to new things to help them with their pitching,” she said. “It gave me confidence that they saw me pitching and sought me out for advice.”

The athletes hope to use this experience as a springboard to a successful 2009 campaign for the Dayton softball program. Last year the Flyers recorded their first 20-win campaign in three years and more than doubled their Atlantic 10 win total from the 2007 season.

“Playing in this tournament helped prepare me. I saw different levels of play and got international experience,” said Stegeman.

“I just want to play softball and I’ll play in the position where the team needs me most,” added Cronkhite. “I think this trip made me more of a team player.”

Cronkhite played catcher and second base for her squad, while Falk pitched for hers. Here is Emily Stegeman’s take on how they played:

“Every game I saw Raime she was playing catcher. She did really well blocking, threw a girl out at second base and picked someone off at first. Allie pitched great. She got ahead of batters and struck out a lot of people. She hit in the No. 4 spot and did a really nice job.”

Stegeman played her normal role as shortstop. Allie Falk gives her commentary:

“Emily, of course played shortstop, and did very well. She has played that position for so long it’s like second nature to her. She batted second and did her job of moving runners and getting on base.”

Brasil Helps Markham To Bronze Medal At Canadian Nationals

August 11, 2008 International No Comments

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate standout softball player Kim Brasil helped lead the Markham Jaguars to the Bronze Medal at the 2008 Canadian National Championships in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.

Markham entered the Canadian Nationals having won four straight National Championships and were going for five in a row, including three straight playing in the Midget Girls classification.

Things started well for Markham as the Jaguars won their first four games of the tournament. Brasil was 1-for-4 in Markham’s 3-2 win over the Edmonton `89 Warriors in the opening game. She was 1-for-2 with a run in the 8-0 victory over the Rebelles `89 squad in the Jags’ second game of the tournament. She scored a run in 5-0 victory over the NB Vitos in the third game of the championships. Markham crushed the PEI Gators, 10-0, in the fourth game of the tourney, though Brasil did not play.

Despite the strong start, Markham ran into a buzz saw in form of the Surrey Storm in the fifth game of the tournament and the contest would be an indication of what was to come for the Jags the rest of the tournament. The Storm took a 2-1 win to deliver the Jags their first loss of the tournament.

Markham got back on track with a 1-0 victory over the Manitoba Angels in the next game and claimed a 5-1 win over the Cole Harbour Comets with Brasil scoring a run in game No. 7 of the tournament. The win allowed Markham to move into the championship round of the tournament.

Markham opened the championship round of the tournament against a familiar for, the Whitby Eagles. Both teams are from Ontario and see each other throughout the summer. The game lived up to its billing with Markham squeaking out a 2-1 win in 11 innings.

Brasil scored a run in Markham’s next game, but Markham could not hold down the Whiterock Renegades as the Jags fell, 5-4, to move into the elimination portion of the championship round. Markham faced the Surrey Storm in the next game and the Storm again limited Markham’s offensive production and took a 2-0 win to move into the championship final. Surrey went on to win the Canadian National Championship. Brasil finished the tournament with four runs scored and did not commit an error playing both right field and catcher for the Jaguars.

Brasil was a key member of the Upstate softball program in 2008, helping lead the Spartans to a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship and a 34-15 overall record. Brasil was an A-Sun All-Freshman team selection after hitting .314 with eight doubles and five triples for Upstate. She split time at left field and catcher last season for the Spartans and is expected to spend the majority of her time at catcher in 2009 for Upstate
