Keep a full bucket of balls on the pitchers mound, and throw every ball in the dirt in front of the catcher. Vary the pitches – some to the glove side, some right at the catcher, and some to the backhand side. After throwing all the balls in the bucket into the dirt (to practice keeping the ball in front of you) there are usually many balls behind the catcher, against the fence or whatever backstop exists. When the last ball is about to be thrown the pitcher must warn the catcher.

Once this ball gets by the catcher, they have to get every single ball as fast as they can. When the last ball gets by the catcher, the pitcher (usually the coach) must grab the empty bucket and run to home plate. The catcher must make accurate throws to home so the pitcher can refill the bucket. Any wild throws (throws past the pitcher covering home with the bucket) must be retrieved by the catcher.

Try timing this event for increase in speed.

Get behind the plate in full gear, and have the coach, or pitcher throw, or pitch balls to both sides of you.

The point is to be able to get your body in front of the ball, so it never gets away from you. You do this for 50 balls once at the beginning and once at the end of practice. It’s very tiring because you don’t have time to get up and walk back to the plate.

For this drill, you need several softballs and a hula hoop, and should employ a catcher, a pitcher, a third player, and a coach.

The catcher crouches behind home plate, while the pitcher stands at his/her mound, and the third player stands at second base. The coach stands in between second base and the pitching circle, holding the hula hoop directly in the line of play.

The catcher throws a softball through the hula hoop to the player standing at second base. The first few times, the pitcher may stand off to the side. For an added challenge and better game simulation, the pitcher stands in the pitching circle and ducks when he/she sees the catcher throw.

This drill focuses on accuracy, and helps form a connection and trust between catcher and pitcher.

For this drill, you need several tennis balls, and should employ a catcher in full gear, and a second player or coach.

Catchers dress in full gear, but without his/her glove, and crouch behind home plate in the usual stance, with toes pointed slightly in, towards the plate. Tie the catcher’s hands behind his/her back. Set boundaries by drawing a half-circle around the front of the catcher. This may be done either by drawing in the dirt, or placing a rope or similar material about a foot from the catcher’s feet.

A second player, or coach, stands at the pitching circle and throws a tennis ball low pitch or short hop towards the catcher. The catcher uses his/her body, focusing on chest, legs, and shoulders, to keep each ball within the designated arch drawn around him/her, and bows shoulders to guide balls towards the front of home plate.

This drill focuses on blocking, and gets catchers prepped for the sometimes discomfort of their padded gear.

For this drill, you need a few sponge balls and something to tie your catcher’s hands with, and should employ a catcher and a pitcher.

This works best inside (see the variation for outside play).

The catcher gets in his/her usual stance, but has his/her hands tied behind back. At the signal, the pitcher begins throwing sponge balls into the ground, simulating a bounce toward home plate, while the catcher attempts to block them with his/her body.

This drill focuses on defensive plays and blocking pitches thrown on a bounce, and forces the catcher to learn to use his/her body by tying his/her hands back.

One variation on this drill uses a pitching machine in the pitcher’s circle, while the catcher crouches, in full gear, behind home plate.

For this drill, you need at least 10 softballs, and should employ a pitcher and a catcher.

Place as many balls as you can behind the catcher, who is in his/her usual position. The pitcher begins in the pitcher’s circle, or somewhere between there and home plate.

At the signal, the catcher grabs a ball and quickly throws it to the pitcher, who is running from where he/she began, to a base. This is to simulate tagging a baserunner.

This drill improves the catcher’s accuracy and speed, as well as the pitcher’s.

For added challenge, employ a baserunner to “steal” bases, so the pitcher has an actual player to tag. This runner begins at any base, but puts more pressure on both catcher and pitcher if beginning at third and trying to steal home plate.
