The dominant pitcher/player in collegiate softball, Finch finished the 2001 season with a 32-0 pitching record to establish the NCAA record… Earned the Honda Softball Award as the national Player of the Year… Received Most Outstanding Player honors after posting a 3-0 record in Women’s College World Series… Earned first-team All-America honors… 2001 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year… Along with a number of other Cats, Finch earned Louisville Slugger All-Pacific Region honors and WCWS All-Tournament honors… First-team All-Pac-10 honors… Finch had an ERA of 0.54 and tossed her fifth career no-hitter… Finch has a streak of 40 consecutive victories, No. 2 in the NCAA record book, entering 2002 play… Struck out a career-high 14 twice, against South Carolina and Stanford, plus had back-to-back 13 K games against the Cardinal… Struck out 10 or more in one seven-start stretch… The first baseman or designated player when not pitching, she had a batting average of .309… Hit three grand slams and had 11 home runs… Finch drove in nine runs in one game against Oregon, which tied for the second-best single-game figure in NCAA history and matched former UA slugger Laura Espinoza’s record… Finch’s 29-2 record in 2000 and her 0.79 ERA earned her first-team All-America honors as an at-large selection… Her power at the plate tied her with a team-high 16 home runs… Hit .327 for the season… As first baseman she recorded a .983 fielding percentage in 287 chances… Finch tossed three no-hitters vs. Tennessee Tech, Drake and Nebraska in the NCAA Regional Final… She also had three one-hitters and four two-hitters… Went 3-0 with an 0.35 ERA in Regionals, earning her the Most Outstanding Player award for the second straight year… Led the team at the plate in Pac-10 play with a hitting average of .370… Finch had a hitting streak of 14 games… Earned All-Pac-10 first-team honors…Finch’s 24 pitching victories in 1999 is second only to teammate Becky Lemke’s 25 (1998) among Arizona freshman performances… Led the team with 14 doubles and 21 extra-base hits… Led the team most of the year and finished second with seven home runs… Turned in a .990 fielding percentage in 192 chances at the bag… Threw a no-hitter vs. Southwest Texas State in NCAA Regional play, plus had a one-hitter vs. Kansas and a two-hitter vs. Maryland in the same tournament, earning NCAA Region 2 Most Outstanding Player honors… Also hit .353 with four doubles, a home run and six RBI to help the Cats win the Regional… Multiple hits in 12 games… Honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors in 1999… ASA background at the top levels – member of National Championship teams at 12 & under (1993), 14 & under (1995) and 18 & under Gold (1997), plus a No. 2 finish in 1998 and a fourth-place in ‘92… Member of the Team USA for inaugural Junior Superball international competition – gold-medal winners over Australia in June 1998…

Jennie had 2-0 won/loss record in the 2004 Athens, Greece, Summer Olympics, striking out 13 batters in eight innings while giving up only one hit, one walk, and no runs at all. Her pitching helped lead the American team to the gold medal.

Last week I went to Oklahoma for Tthe Women’s College World Series. While there I met UCLA softball legend Sue Enquist. She was kind enough to give me an interview. You can find her website at SueEnquist.com She has some great advice for both softball coaches, and softball players.

Sue’s Bio

Legendary UCLA Softball Coach, WSF Hall of Famer and NFCA Hall of Famer

Sue Enquist holds more National Championships (11) than anyone in the history of softball. She is UCLA Softball’s first All-American, National Champion, and Hall of Famer.

In 2006, Enquist concluded her storied 27 year career as head coach of the UCLA Bruins with a 887-175-1 (.835) record, making her the winningest softball coach among all active coaches. She is the only person in NCAA Softball history to win a championship as a head coach and a player. Hailed a Òcoaching legendÓ by ESPN, Sue Enquist’s tenure produced 65 All-Americans and 12 Olympians.

She has been inducted into the Women’s Sports Foundation International Hall of Fame, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the UCLA Hall of Fame. Enquist is also the recipient of multiple National Coach of the Year and Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors. She concluded her UCLA MVP playing career with a career batting average of .401. In her tenure as both a player and coach, Enquist has a combined 1,314 wins. UCLA Magazine lists her among the top 20th Century Bruins.

A former World Champion and USA National Team coach and player, she is the only person to have played on the first Pan American gold medal team (1979) and to coach on the first Olympic Team National Staff (1996), which took home the first gold medal in the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

Beyond her roles as coach and player, Sue Enquist is regarded as a leading innovator of softball instructional materials and equipment. In addition to her 25 instructional videos covering all facets of the game, Enquist is the author of the book 101 Offensive Drills for Softball. Together with MLB Player Don Slaught, she co-developed and co-produced RightViewPro hitting instructional software. ÊShe is also the inventor of the SB401 training bat, as well as the Kwik-Slide Sliding wrap, which increases player protection when sliding. Her forthcoming book on leadership is slated for release later this year.

Off the softball field, Sue Enquist has gained the reputation as a dynamic and highly sought after international motivational speaker. Her list of prestigious speaking venues includes: the United States Olympic Committee Leadership Summit (USOC), University of California Office of the President-Risk Management Division(UCLA), Stryker Endoscopy, Major League Baseball (MLB) RBI Softball World Series, LA Dodgers, National Fastpitch Coaches Convention, Women’s Sports Foundation, USA Olympic Synchronized Swimming Association, Italian Olympic Softball Program, Adidas, Wilson Sports, Easton Sports, National Pro Skaters Convention, California Athletic Directors National Convention, and numerous others. She also speaks at numerous colleges and high schools across the country. Currently, she runs over 30 seminars for parents, coaches and players across the United States.

Sue Enquist grew up in San Clemente, California, and is a former professional surfer. Today she lives in Huntington Beach, California, where she surfs daily and enjoys spending time with her family.

I interview Kaci Clark this week. Kaci is back in the United States just this year after spending the last two years competing in the Japan League for Team Honda.

Before that, she competed in the National Pro Fastpitch League (also known as the WPSL and WPF) for six years, bringing home 3 professional championships. She was a four time All-Star in addition to being twice named the League’s Pitcher of the Year and once the League’s MVP. She was the WPSL’s all-time career leader in wins, strikeouts, and shutouts as well as being ranked both 1st and 2nd in single-season strikeouts.

During the League’s hiatus in 2002 and 2003, Clark was a member of the most storied program in all of softball, the Stratford Brakettes. Kaci helped lead the team to two consecutive National Championships while twice being named an ASA All-American in addition to leading the team in shutouts, wins, no-hitters, strikeouts, and perfect games during both seasons. She was also honored with the Bertha Tickey award for the most outstanding ASA pitcher in 2003.

Kaci started her college career at Georgia State University and after two seasons of being named the conference Player of the Year as well as the University’s Female Athlete of the Year, she transferred to UCLA to finish the last two years of her college career. At UCLA, she posted a career record of 24-3, including a perfect record of 10-0 in her junior year.

In case you don’t know who Sandy Fischer is, I will tell you. Sandy completed a stellar twenty three year coaching career at Oklahoma State University, in which her teams made six appearances at the NCAA Women’s College World Series and won nine Conference Championships. Sandy was selected Midwest Region Coach of the Year five times and was named National Coach of the Year in 1989. She has coached 26 All-Americans, including Olympic players Michele Smith and Melanie Roche. Sandy achieved the 900 win milestone in her career in 2001.

Softball has been a way of life for Sandy, as she has played at every level of the game. As the starting pitcher for Western Illinois University, she led her team to the Women’s Collegiate World Series in 1972, 1973, and 1975. She also played in the Women’s Professional Softball League from 1976-1979 with the championship Connecticut Falcons team. Sandy recently returned to the professional ranks as a coach in the newly launched Professional Fastpitch Extreme Tour.

Sandy was recently selected for induction into the prestigious National Fastpitch Coaches Hall of Fame, which will occur at the National Convention in December 2008.
