In The Zone is working on getting every school-aged child in the DFW area(Grades K-6 to start) that cannot afford a pair of gym shoes a pair of their own. These children are unable to participate in P.E. classes due to wearing the wrong type of shoes according to school policies. Now that my children are in school, I am aware of how limited our childrens P.E. time is these days, so it is so important for each child to be able to participate. Each child should get the chance to understand the importance of physical fitness and competition and not just watch their friends run around because they are unable to afford the proper shoes.
Six Years ago I worked as a personal trainer and was a part of a program that would go to under-privileged schools and do a fitness class with the kids. The childrens ages ranged from 6-11 and over half of them did not have proper shoes to participate per school policy. After 6 weeks of me going to their school multiple times a week and sending notes home to their parents, half of the class still did not have the proper shoes because they just could not afford it. I felt extremely bad that these children could not participate with their classmates and I saw the disappointment in their faces every day as well.
But now I realize that this is not something that just occurs in under-privileged schools, this is happening everywhere.
As an athlete I looked forward to P.E. classes every day and whatever competition we were going to have. I would wear dresses as a child with my gym shoes so I would never have to sit out, this was a part of my childhood I remember! So now I would like to try and get a pair of gym shoes on every child’s feet that cannot afford them so they too can participate and enjoy PE as we all once did. Perhaps getting a pair of shoes to these children may encourage them to participate in sports outside of school or as they get older in school sponsored sports.
The school year has already begun, but it’s never too late to start this. So we are taking monetary donations which we will use to purchase as many shoes as possible for as many schools as we can; or you can also donate either new or gently used shoes for boys and girls grades k-6th . Donations can be anonymous or you can attach your name or team/organization.
Any and all amounts will be greatly appreciated. Also, since we are not a non-profit organization, donations cannot be written off for tax purposes.
While I realize that this is not completely related to softball or baseball, it is about a child’s need for fitness and exercise and no child should be left out.
Thank you for any donations that can be made!

If you live out of town or just like to help a child near you, I encourage you to seek out a local school and call to see if there are children in need of shoes! Any help is wonderful no matter how you give it or who you give it through!
