Tagging up on a dead ball

Here is my question with regard to slowpitch softball:

A runner is on first and the batter hits a line drive that looks like it will go over the shortstop's head.  The runner takes off.  The shortstop has an unbelievable vertical and makes the catch.  The runner heads back to first.  The shortstop tries to throw him out, but makes a wild throw that goes out of bounds.  The umpire calls "dead ball" and awards the runner third.  Without actually making it back to first, the runner immediately turns around and heads to third.  When he gets to third, the pitcher makes a dead ball appeal, arguing that the runner did not tag up.

Is the runner out for failing to tag up?

I would have to say no, due to th fact the umpired instructed the runner to take third. Once the umpire intervenes and makes a call all runners are safe until ball is put into play, but since the runner is acting on the umps direction there is no way a coach would let that one go.

Yes.

Runners are required to complete their base running responsibilities before accepting their awarded base.

This is still requires an appeal  to get an out(as you described).
