The Travel Ball Advice Book

The Travel Ball Advice Book

The Travel Ball Advice Book Compiled By Gary Leland

I realize many people are thinking about moving from recreational ball to travel ball (select), and they have lots of questions. I thought it would be great if they had a resource that would give them information to help them in their decision making process.

I decided to go straight to the Fastpitch TV Facebook Family located at Facebook.com/FastpitchTV.

The Fastpitch TV's Facebook Family consists of over 95,000 members. The majority of these are Travel Ball coaches, and parents. In this book Gary asked the community to provide you advice from their experiences. Gary does not state any of the advice is right or wrong, but they do give you many different coaches and parents thoughts on the subject.

Over 100 people responded with Travel Ball Advice. I took these pieces of advice and wrapped them up in an ebook for you.

Brought to you by Gary Leland publisher of the Fastpitch Softball TV Network. Gary's teams won the 14 and under, and the 15 and under Texas USSSA State championships back to back. His teams came in fourth and fifth in the USSSA National Championships for 14 under, and 15 under. Now he spends his time creating fastpitch softball blogs, books, videos, and podcasts. Great practice drills for fastpitch softball players. This book has drills for base running, pitching, hitting, catching, and fielding.

Now he shares some of the drills his team used while training his fastpitch softball team.

It seems like a lifetime ago, but I still remember when I started coaching my daughters fastpitch softball team. I had played a little baseball growing up, and some slowpitch softball along the way too.

I soon found out two things. One is that fastpitch softball was a sport of its own. While so many thing are the same. There are many thing that are different in fastpitch softball than baseball, or slowpitch softball.

Two is that I knew nothing about coaching fastpitch softball players at all. Playing sports had not really taught me how to coach.

One of the main things new coaches are looking for is information. This book is my attempt to provide another source for that information.

While I admit I did not come up with these fastpitch softball drills. Many of them have probably been used for years, and years. What I did was find many of the great drills I used with my players while coaching. Then I wrote them in an easy to understand format. Trying to make them easy to learn and use.

While this may be a guide for coaches to help their young players, this is also be a great resource for parents hoping to help their daughters become better fastpitch softball players.

A Series Of Their Own

A Series Of Their OwnFastpitch TV is now the publisher, and distributor of “A Series Of Their Own”

Softball championship chronicled in a unique book

The inspirational roots of college softball’s national championship and its 43 years of explosive growth are chronicled in this unique, 296-page book, A Series of Their Own: The History of the Women’s College World Series. The book includes narratives on each of the annual tournaments from 1969-2012 within the context of the changing landscape of women’s collegiate sports.

To write this story, the authors drew on their backgrounds writing about and photographing this championship event while working at the Amateur Softball Association, the national governing body for softball in the United States. Newspaper accounts, published and unpublished photos, and other sources were used in this book. Prominent players, coaches and tournament organizers also contributed to this compelling narrative.

“A Series Of Their Own” is normally $24.95, but on sale for the first time at $14.95

Book serves as a comprehensive reference source

A Series of Their Own includes official team standings and player awards for the 44 national softball championships from 1969 through 2012. Appendices and an index for players and teams allow readers to quickly find information on individual and team participants from these storied tournaments. The name index contains more than 1,200 listings for players and coaches from the decades of championship play.

Book includes photos, team listings and brackets

Carefully researched and edited, A Series of Their Own blends a compelling story with much-needed factual information. Historical photos, team standings and tournament brackets illustrate this moving account of how women’s collegiate softball started and grew its national championship.

The authors used archived newspaper articles and interviews with past participants as their primary sources to weave this narrative. The book provides information and facts on games from individual tournaments. The details of these competitive events are written within the larger context of the growth of women’s collegiate softball following Title IX legislation in the early 1970s.

The book gives brief follow-ups on the lives of many players and coaches after appearances in women’s series tournaments. An index of more than 1,200 players and coaches provides a quick reference to find these players’ appearances in the book’s 269-page narrative.

What others say about A Series of Their Own

“This is the only comprehensive book written about the history of the Women’s College World Series. It is a must-read if you were, or still are, involved in college softball or its national championship. It is also a must-read for young softball athletes to better understand where this event got its roots.”
Margie Wright (27 years as head softball coach at Fresno State University)

“This book has been so much fun for me to remember those years. It was great to read because during most of the games, I was busy handling ticket problems or parking lot problems, or other issues. Thanks for giving me a play-by-play of the action that I missed.”
Marita Hynes (director of 19 women’s series tournaments)

“Excellent review of the Women's College World Series. Brings back so many great memories. Thanks to the authors for recapturing these moments.”
