Baylor Softball’s Crockett Awarded NCAA Elite 89 Award

Lady Bears return to WCWS for first time since 2011; matched up with No. 5 seed Florida

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – Baylor junior infielder Sarah Crockett was named NCAA Division I Softball’s recipient of the 2014 Elite 89 award presented at the Women’s College World Series banquet Tuesday night.

The award recognizes the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average who has reached the competition at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 men’s and women’s championships across its three divisions.

Baylor is one of eight teams in the Women’s College World Series and Crockett was presented the award at the WCWS Kickoff Banquet at Devon Tower.

Students are eligible if they have achieved at least a sophomore in academic and athletics standing and if he or she is in at least the second year of competition (in any sport) at his or her current institution. The student-athlete must be on the active roster and a member of the designated squad size for the championship site.

Crockett is a double major in international studies and Arabic and middle eastern studies.

“We are very proud of Sarah and her accomplishments in the classroom,” said Baylor Associate Athletic Director of Academic Services Bart Byrd. “She is a testament to the athletic department’s efforts to create a high standard both on and off the playing field.”

Crockett and the Lady Bears take on Florida to open the 2014 WCWS at 11 a.m. Thursday on ESPN.
