Florida State Softball Summer Wrap-Up

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Current Seminoles used the summer to represent Puerto Rico at several competitions and earned a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships, while former FSU softball players participated in professional and international leagues throughout the world. Lacey Waldrop won an NPF Championship, while Pan Am gold medals were earned by Kaleigh Rafter (Canada – women’s softball) and Michelle Snyder (USA – women’s baseball).

The 2015 National Pro Fastpitch season ended on August 17 with Waldrop and the Chicago Bandits winning their third Cowles Cup in program history with a sweep of the USSSA Pride in the NPF Championship Series. Waldrop finished with a 3-5 record in the circle along with a 3.42 ERA and 38 strikeouts in her first season of professional softball.

The Pride and assistant coach Travis Wilson placed second, after taking home the Cowles Cup in 2013 and 2014. The Florida State hitting coach worked with the professionals this summer and the Pride led the league in batting average and doubles, while finishing second in home runs and runs scored.

Briana Hamilton closed out the season with the Akron Racers after starting the year with the Rebellion, batting .205 with 17 hits, two doubles, three home runs and nine RBI.

Rookie outfielder Courtney Senas earned NPF Defensive Player of the Year honors for the PA Rebellion as she totaled four outfield assists and several diving catches on the year. From the plate, she batted .232 with five doubles, one home run, nine RBI and 10 runs scored.

Maddie O’Brien saw action at shortstop for the Rebellion and posted six hits, with a double, triple and five runs scored on the year. After the NPF season ended, O’Brien traveled to Italy to compete with the Italian Club team, Specchiasol, from Bussolengo. Specciasol is currently in the Italian league playoffs that continues through the end of September.

Rafter and Snyder were teammates on the 2009 Florida State softball team and each went to compete at the 2015 Pan American Games for their home country – Rafter with Team Canada to play women’s softball and Snyder with Team USA as women’s baseball held its first international competition.

Each had impressive performances in leading their respective countries to a Gold Medal at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada. Rafter batted .385 with three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI as a catcher for Team Canada. Snyder batted .429 with zero strikeouts for Team USA, tallying two doubles and eight RBI while scoring three runs.

Three current Seminoles – Korina Rosario, Sabrina Stutsman and Meghan King – competed for Puerto Rico at the 2015 Junior WBSC World Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. The trio earned a bronze medal as they helped Puerto Rico to a third place finish, including wins over Canada, China and Australia.

Stutsman batted .241 (7-for-29) with three doubles, five RBI and three runs scored as the incoming freshman primarily played third base. As an outfielder, Rosario batted .243 (9-for-37) for the tournament with a double, triple, five RBI and five runs scored. She also pitched in one game – a start against Team USA – and allowed four runs in 2.0 innings.

The other 10 pitching starts for Puerto Rico were made by King as the redshirt freshman pitcher tallied 60.2 innings of work to set the All-Tournament record and ended with a 0.57 ERA, allowing just five earned runs for the entire tournament. She posted complete-game shutout victories over Canada and China and finished with 63 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .138.

The Florida State softball 2015 fall season starts in a month with an intrasquad scrimmage and exhibition game against Georgia Highlands College on October 15. In all, FSU will play against eight schools this fall as it prepares for the 2016 season.
