Coach Russ Milligan – Hitting Drills. Produced By Gary Leland
This week’s video is hosted by Coach Russ Milligan as he explains two hitting drills that have revolutionized his softball team’s try-outs. This video was filmed at Softball Con in Louisville, Kentucky. The first drill works on off-speed pitches and allows the coach to establish whether or not the player has quick hands. It is important for any fastpitch softball player to have quick hands not only in playing defense but hitting as well. Coach Milligan takes you through the set-up of his three plate drill so you can create your own fastpitch softball team of power hitters.
Coach Milligan also explains his favorite softball hitting drill which originated in his early years after facing a one run game loss situation. Fastpitch softball players at any level will be faced with this type of pressure situation and being able to pick their pitch and drive the ball to the right side of the field to secure the lead runner into scoring position. No hitting drill is complete without giving the defense a workout, this drill teaches the batter how to hit effectively and creates an aggressive defense.
Critical elements of being a power hitter is the ability to adjust to the speed of the incoming pitch and perform in pressure situations.
