Tag Play Drill For Catchers – Dianne Baker

BakerObjective: To improve the catcher's handling of short hops at the plate.

Setup: One coach is in front of  home plate.  Another coach is 10 feet from home plate acting as a runner coming from third. The catcher is in defensive position. One bucket of  balls  is placed by the coach.

Directions: the coach will throw short hop throws from all areas of the infield to the catcher. The catcher will work to handle the short hops and then lay the tag on the coach coming into home from third base.

Coaching Information: The coach acting as the base runner should check the balance of the catcher when the tag is applied. This can be done by pushing on the catcher after the catch.

Note: Full protective gear should be worn by the catcher when in the defensive position.

  • just saying

Personally, while I guess I see somewhat of a point – I think it would be easier just to teach my OF’s to throw it all the way or put it on a long hop. That’s what we teach.
