"SHE WON!!!" read the text from my hairdresser.

Post title Written By Rita Lynn Gilman

It wasn't a beauty contest that was won. You see, my hair stylist is Beth Waldrop, mother of Lacey Waldrop…1st Team All-American and the 2014 USA Collegiate Softball Player of the Year!!

My relationship with Lacey started before she was born. My mother and her grandmother were best friends growing up in a tiny coal mining town in West Virginia. They travelled together to nursing school in Richmond, Va and never left.

Ever since Lacey started pitching lessons with me on Oct 2nd, 2003, her mom and I have traded hair cuts and highlights for instruction. The barter system created quite a star pitcher! My hairdo has a particular shine to it these days as Lacey humbly racks up honors and I've flown to Oklahoma City to watch her play in the Women's College World Series.

After high school graduation Lacey wrote me a thank you note and concluded: “I will be your first student to make you go to Oklahoma City.” Bold words from a kid with big plans. I never forgot it and I cried in Tallahassee as Courtney Senas' walk-off homerun flew over the fence and sealed the deal last Friday in Super Regionals.

As in sports, timing is everything in business. A week ago I added a particularly interesting book to my website: A Series of Their Own – The History of the Women's College World Series. I happily read it on my flights to OKC this morning and can't wait to see how this year's chapter unfolds.

Is it timing or good Karma for Lacey??

Oh, and how does my hair look?
