Another in my set of blog posts called 10 questions. On these short posts I send 10 questions to great softball players, and coaches. Then I am post the questions with their answers.
This week former Olympian Shelly Stokes answers my 10 questions.Written By Gary Leland
Q. How old were you when you started playing softball?
A. I was 8.
Q. Was there anyone special in your life that helped you become a great player?
A. I had many good coaches at an early age but coach Margie Wright had the biggest impact on my softball career.
Q. How do you get ready for a game?
A. I liked to get dressed and ready to play early so I could have some time to my self prior to the game.
Q. What do you like to do when you are not involved with softball?
A. Spend time with family and I've really grown to love the game of soccer.
Q. What factors do you feel have influenced you the most to become the player and you are today?
A. Never taking the easy way out and always working harder than your competitor!
Q. Do you have any routines are superstitions that you implement regularly?
A. Not really.
Q. What is your favorite softball memory?
A. Winning a Gold Medal at the Olympics
Q. How much value do you place on mental training? Do you have any advice for others in this area?
A. The mental aspect of the game is huge!! You have to prepare just as much for the mental side of the game as you do for the physical side.
Q. If you could do anything else in the world as a profession, what would it be and why?
A. I would love to have been able to be a professional athlete as a full time career.
Q. What is the greatest obstacle you have had to overcome in your playing and/or coaching career?
A. Trying to make the Olympic team and improving my weaknesses in order to be considered for the team. Athletes have to be realistic with their abilities and continue to become the best possible athlete they can.
