What Is The Speed Of A Change Up Pitch?
by Dr. Sherry Werner Ph’D

Produced By Gary Leland

In this episode of the Fastpitch Softball Chat Show, Dr. Sherry Werner answers a common question from pitcher's involving pitching speed. “How much slower should my change-up pitch be compared to my fastball?”

Dr. Werner says typically a good rule of thumb range is anywhere from 8-15 mph slower. Taking into account how fast your fastball pitch is. This recommendation is based on the age level of fastpitch softball your pitcher is playing at. As well as their pitching experience.

Fastpitch Softball Pitching Speed Recommendation:

If throwing a 60 mph fastball,

  • Pitch speed of 12-15 mph slower

If throwing a 45 mph fastball,

  • Pitch speed of 8-12 mph slower
