Sports Historians Of The Year - Bill Plummer

Written By Bill Plummer

The only book on the history of the Women's College World Series “”A Series of Their Own” and its two co-authors, Bill Plummer and Larry Floyd, were honored January 30th in Guthrie at a luncheon sponsored by the Territorial Capital Sports Museum.

Co-Authors Plummer and Floyd were named Oklahoma's Sports Historians of the Year for 2014 and received certificates from Richard Hendricks, executive director of the Territorial Capital Sports Museum, formerly the Oklahoma Sports Museum. “We are proud to recognize Larry Floyd and Bill Plummer for their great service to Oklahoma's rich athletic heritage by researching and writing the amazing growth of women's college softball,” said Hendricks.

Besides the two co-authors, also attending were former OCU softball coach Gerry Pinkston and OU assistant coach Melyssa Lombardi and OSU head coach Rich Wieligman.

The book that sparked these honors for its authors chronicles the women's collegiate softball championship from its beginning in 1969 in Omaha, Neb. through the 2012 Women's College World Series, which was won by Alabama. It guides readers through the tourneys complete with won and lost records, information about past great players as well as four-color photos and pictures of the national champions. The book also shares how changing social attitudes toward women as competitive athletes and funding from federal Title IX legislation combined to promote college softball and its national championship.

The book ” A Series of Their Own: The History of the Women's College World Series,” is available for purchase at
