TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The accolades continue to come in for junior pitcher Lacey Waldrop as she was named as one of the three finalists for the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year as announced by The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball on Wednesday. The Chester, Va., native has already been named the 2014 ACC Pitcher of the Year and was honored on the 2014 ACC All-Tournament Team and the 2014 NCAA Tallahassee All-Regional most valuable player.

Sierra Romero from Michigan and Ally Carda of UCLA are the other two players named as finalists for the award. The winner of the 2014 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced on May 27 at the team only banquet just prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS.

“This is a great honor for Lacey, but also for this team,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “Our bullpen works together to come up with game plans for each team that we face and the defense that plays behind her is one of the best in the country. I am very proud of the work that she has put in to be a leader for this family and am excited for her to be named as one of the three finalists for this award.”

Waldrop leads the NCAA with 36 wins and is second in the country with a 0.90 ERA. Her 36 wins sets a new FSU single-season record and she now has now has 79 which is tied for fifth in program history. She ranks in the top-40 nationally in strikeouts (274 – 14th), hits per seven innings (4.44 – 16th) and strikeouts per seven innings (7.9 – 38th).

The junior was superb in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional from May 16-18. She went 3-0 with a miniscule 0.30 ERA, allowing just one run over 23.0 innings pitched. Waldrop recorded 18 strikeouts against just three walks, which two walks being intentional. Her most impressive performance came on May 17 as she tossed a career-high 11.0 innings in a complete-game shutout over USF to send FSU to the regional final.

Waldrop has been named ACC Player of the Week seven times in 2014 to set an ACC record and was named NFCA National Player of the Week on March 4. She has six wins against top-25 opponents this season with a 1.48 ERA, 61.2 innings pitched, 57 strikeouts and 18 walks against ranked opponents.

“It is just an honor to even be considered with Carda and Romero as a finalist for this award,” said Waldrop. “I couldn’t have done any of this without my teammates. Pitching is something funny because you can’t do it by yourself. You have to have backup from your defense and your offense to make you feel confident that they will make plays behind you.

“To me, this is a team award and shows how hard they have all worked to be confident in me and confident in their own skills. I am so proud of our team to see how far we have come and very excited to be named as a finalist for this award. It is not something I could have ever imagined.”
